Volume up, up up . . .

Overheard outside Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore this evening.
The evening's concert was by Gayathri Venkataraghavan.
And it had to do with the case of artistes goading the sound engineer to 'up' the output level of the mikes.

"Last year, on a  chill evening, a mridangam artiste on stage kept asking the engineer to raise the volume. He was told in sign language that it was reasonably high! It was then we noticed that there was cotton in his ears; he must have stuffed it in because of the chill . .so we asked him to take it out. He did and immediately he asked us to lower the level . ."
