Good accompanists help make great concert

Dr Narmada gave a satisfying concert at the BVB on Wednesday (28/11/2012).

However, there seemed to be a shortage of accompanying artistes that day. So much so that Narmada, who had just presented a solo at the 5.00 pm slot, was asked to accompany Sowmya immediately at the 6.45 pm slot. Poonkulam Subramanian, who accompanied Narmada was also asked to accompany Sowmya.

However, I noted that the quality of music was much improved when Narmada and Subramanian started accompanying Sowmya. It is again proof of what the great Palghat Mani Iyer has opined - the main artist should be of such a stature that he/she should be able to bring up the accompanists to a higher level !
